A Comprehensive Review of Strategic Management Accounting Information and Its Role in Enhancing the Financial Performance and Return on Investment of Business Enterprises

Abstract
This study aims to systematically review the role of Strategic Management Accounting (SMA) information systems in improving the financial performance and return on investment (ROI) of business enterprises. The research examines 42 credible domestic and international studies published between 2020 and 2026. To provide a comprehensive theoretical foundation, the findings were analyzed based on an integrated framework comprising six fundamental theoretical perspectives: the Resource-Based View, Contingency Theory, Agency Theory, the Rational Decision-Making Approach, Information Quality Theory, and Stakeholder Theory. The results indicate that in more than 78% of the reviewed studies, the implementation and effective utilization of SMA information systems had a positive and statistically significant effect on financial performance and return on investment. The findings further demonstrate that integrated information systems, technological investment, effective internal control mechanisms, and continuous employee training are among the most important organizational and technological factors supporting the successful use of SMA systems. These factors improve the availability, accuracy, timeliness, and strategic relevance of accounting information, thereby enabling managers to make more informed and rational decisions. Moreover, the effective integration of strategic accounting information with organizational information systems strengthens managerial capabilities, improves resource allocation, reduces operational inefficiencies, and enhances organizational responsiveness to market changes. Overall, the evidence suggests that SMA information systems can function not merely as accounting tools but as strategic resources that contribute to sustainable competitive advantage.
