Geomembrane-lined water storage ponds are widely used in various industries due to their high efficiency and reasonable cost. However, accidents caused by leakage, slope slippage, and structural destruction can have irreparable environmental and economic consequences. The purpose of the present study is to explain the key dimensions and components of safety in geomembrane water storage ponds to prevent accidents. This study was conducted with a qualitative approach and using the content analysis method. The statistical population included experts and specialists active in the design, implementation, and supervision of geomembrane ponds, university professors, and researchers in the fields of geotechnics, hydraulics, and structural safety. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 13 experts, and the sampling process continued until theoretical saturation was reached. Data analysis led to the identification of 5 main overarching themes including: 1) structural technical and engineering safety, 2) hydraulic safety and water management, 3) environmental safety and resource protection, 4) operational safety and maintenance, and 5) managerial and human safety. The findings showed that the critical weaknesses in most projects are inaccuracy in the execution of connections (welding) and defects in subsurface drainage systems. Also, emphasis on continuous monitoring of pore pressure, periodic preventive inspections, and specialized training of human resources were identified as determining factors in reducing the risk of accidents.
